The Little Things That Get You Through

Some weeks are heavy, aren’t they? This one’s been a long string of early mornings, late nights, and a to-do list that keeps trying to multiply when I’m not looking. But last night, just as I was about to call it quits for the day, I stepped outside and felt something rare for August in Arizona — cool air after a monsoon rain.

It was one of those quiet, unexpected moments that makes you stop and breathe a little deeper. The smell of wet earth. The way the streetlight caught drops still clinging to the mesquite leaves. For a few minutes, I forgot how tired I was.

There have been other little moments like that this week.

  • My granddaughter’s laugh when she convinced her little brother to wear her sparkly crown.

  • The first sip of coffee in the morning when the house is still quiet.

  • Finishing a tricky scene in one of my manuscripts — one that’s been giving me trouble for weeks.

None of these things fix the bigger challenges — the bills, the deadlines, the long hours at my corporate job. But they soften the edges. They remind me why I’m working so hard to get my books out into the world. They remind me that life isn’t all about the big wins… sometimes it’s about the small ones that carry you from one day to the next.

If you’re having a long week too, I hope you find your little thing today — a moment, a smell, a sound — that reminds you it’s worth keeping on.
